Of Economic Woes, Fears, And Hunger

In catching up on economic news this week, I've noticed a trend toward real world reports. It's as though a few in the media have awakened to the fact that a large segment of our population is struggling to just get by -- which for regular folks isn't exactly news, but it's a welcome change from the usual indifference.

As police and city officials in Chicago deal with a rash of recent shooting incidents, the local Fox News affiliate has questioned the posting of ads for Grand Theft Auto IV on buses and buildings of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The GTA IV transit ads shown by Fox News depict neither violence nor sex.

NEW YORK _ Retail gas prices reached another new milestone Monday, jumping to an average US$3.50 a gallon at filling stations across the United States. Crude oil prices, meanwhile, kept setting records of their own, spiking to a record above $117 a barrel Monday after a Japanese oil tanker was attacked in the Middle East.Diesel prices at the pump also struck a record high of $4.20 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.Gas and diesel are expected to keep climbing _ gas

Cubans are not just washing ashore in the Keys anymore. They have come to the less guarded west coast. Be on the look out for blue barrels (for fuel), and theft of boats from the human smugglers. Should the USA rethink the wet foot/dry foot policy? What will happen once Cuba is opened up to US travelers?
